When to Seek Emergency Eye Care
Eye injuries like deep cuts, punctures, or embedded foreign objects require immediate medical attention to prevent permanent damage or vision loss. If you suspect a serious injury, do not rub the eye or attempt to remove anything yourself. Cover the eye loosely and seek emergency care right away.
Common Types of Eye Injuries
Scratched Eye (Corneal Abrasion): Caused by debris or rubbing the eye, scratches can be painful and increase the risk of infection. Avoid touching the eye and see an eye doctor promptly.
Foreign Objects: Small metal particles, glass, or plant matter can embed in the eye and cause scarring. These must be removed by an eye care professional.
Chemical Exposure: Splashes from cleaning products or sprays can burn the eye. Rinse immediately with clean water for at least 15 minutes, then seek medical attention — especially if vision is blurred or the eye is red and painful.
Protecting Your Eyes
Preventing injury is the best approach. Wear safety glasses during work or sport, avoid rubbing your eyes with dirty hands, and follow proper hygiene when handling chemicals or tools.
