Cataract surgery

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a common eye condition that occur when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy or opaque. This clouding can cause blurred, dim, or distorted vision, and may make everyday tasks like reading or driving more difficult.

Cataracts often develop gradually with age, but they can also result from eye injuries, long-term use of certain medications (such as steroids), or health conditions like diabetes. Over time, the clouding can worsen, affecting one or both eyes, and may require surgical treatment to restore clear vision.

Symptoms

  • Blurred or cloudy vision

  • Glare or halos around lights

  • Difficulty seeing at night

  • Faded colours or frequent prescription changes

Treatment

There are no medications or eye drops that can reverse cataracts. The only effective treatment is surgery, which involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens (called an intraocular lens or IOL).
